Preparing for College

College Planning Timeline

January - February

  • Set up and account with collegeboard.com "Big Future" and "My Road" to use the self assessment tools and college and career planning resources.

  • Research colleges relative to WHO YOU ARE.

  • Schedule your spring testing SAT and/or ACT. Make sure that it fits your schedule! (eg. sports, AP exams, etc.)

  • Take a full length practice SAT/ACT exam.

  • Internships or volunteer work - SurferMath.

  • Primary focus on getting good grades.

March - July

  • Explore colleges and consider community colleges and transfer agreements.

  • Review your senior year class schedule with your counselor.

  • Plan summer activities early. (Get an interesting job, touring college campuses: Cal State, Univ of Cal, Private, Catholic)

  • Get acquainted with college c osts, scholarship opportunities and financial aid: "Pay for College" Net price calculator on College Board site; Calculators available on most college websites; Fastweb.com; go.salliemae.com/scholarship; FASFA4casta

August - January

  • Narrow down list of schools to about 9 (3 schools with a great chance of acceptance, 3 schools with a good chance of acceptance, 3 dream schools with a low chance of acceptance)

  • Application Process

  • Personal Essay

  • Submit FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
